About Us
What the Mayors’ Committee Stands for:
Our mission is to raise awareness of the outstanding untapped resource individuals with disabilities represent to businesses in our community.
Why It Matters
The People
There are more than 57,000 individuals with disabilities in Sonoma County according to the the Sonoma County census.
Individuals with disabilities are at greater risk for social and financial isolation due to lack of employment.
The Businesses
Individuals with disabilities make up 20% of the U.S. population, by hiring people who represent everyone businesses are able to tap into top tier talent while at the same time gaining access to the one trillion dollars ($1,000,000,000,000) in spending these individuals and their families contribute to the U.S. economy every year.
The Community
The mission of equality in employment is supported by the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors, City Mayors, and the families of individuals with disabilities.
Expanding Our Mission
This year the SCMC is proud to announce our goal to bring employment of people with disabilities to the forefront of local government. We are asking local leaders, Supervisors, Mayors, and Council members to join with us to create a hiring program for qualified individuals with disabilities.
This program, similar to the Access to City Employment program which has run successfully in San Francisco for over 20 years, will create a pathway for qualified individuals with disabilities to gain meaningful, high wage, skilled jobs within city and county agencies. Our goal is to have our local government serve as an example of what proactive policies promoting employment equality can do. We hope that this will inspire business leaders in our community to step up to hire qualified individuals with disabilities.
